Description8vo, contemporary panelled calf, raised bands. Frontispiece of a Papal consistory.
Comments¶ A highly anti-Catholic work, written under the guise of a translation of an Italian account of a Papal canonization process, with prefatory remarks and running commentary by Steele, whose attitude is suggested by his characertization of the subject: "It displays the Utmost Abuse of Christianity, and that to the most Fantastical Degree." In most copies (including Rothschild's) leaf F8 is excised, as due to a printer's error it contains the same text as leaf G1; leaf F8 is present in this copy. This copy also contains a number of stubs in the early signatures, and several of these have traces of printing that make identification possible. It is evident that the printing office was in chaos.
