Comments

A political allegory in which Cochinchine represents 18th-century France, and Chinki the French peasant, worker, and average man, overburdened with taxes and driven to near suicide by the reactionary economic policies of the country built on his labor. In the end a benevolent, reformist king saves the day. The political ideas embodied in this work have their source in a prizewinning treatise by a Mr. Clicquot-Blervache, "Mémoire sur les corps de métier," published in 1758. Chinki has sometimes been attributed to Voltaire because a later edition was subtitled, "Second partie de l'Homme aux quarante écus."
