CommentsAnstey's Election Ball was unexpectedly popular, and he was encouraged to produce a revised second edition, to which he also added Bampfylde's wonderful frontispiece. The poem was written for (and won) a contest for a poem about “The Ancient and Modern Dress and Manners of the English Nation Compared.” See A. N. L. Munby “Anstey's Election Ball and The Epistle to Bampfylde" in The Book Collector's Quarterly, no. 16, 1934. Early ink notation on the title page.
