CommentsThe first and only collected edition of the works of poet, translator and curate Francis Fawkes (1720-1777), who was praised by Johnson for his translation of Anacreon, and Johnson is one of the subscribers here - to a superfine copy. 138 of the 735 subscribers ordered copies on superfine paper, of which this is an example. Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down of John Plumptre, who is not listed among the subscribers. Original Poems contains Fawkes' famous song, The Brown Jug, which has remained in print in anthologies of English songs and ballads.
