The only work of fiction by Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), a novel set in a small New England town in the Connecticut River Valley just north of Springfield, with a plot that follows the model of Mary Russell Mitford’s Our Village in how it examines personalities and characters of country life. At the time it was published, there were numerous critics who thought Beecher’s novel was unduly harsh to the Puritans. Norwood was very popular; the later American edition is a common book, but this English edition is scarce.
