Comments

¶ The editor Hellman’s copy, with his notation on the front free endpaper of volume 1, describing the differences between this and the regular Bibliophile issue of 430 copies and stating that this is one of two sets he retained, below which is his additional notation that “I desire this set ultimately to pass / into the possession of my son Geoffrey.” Laid in are three pages of notes by Trent, Hellman’s co-editor, about various aspects of the Journals; and a check for $3000.00 from Hellman to W. Irving Van Wart, presumably in payment for the diaries.
