CommentsSmollett brought the manuscript of The Regicide with him to London as an 18-year old with hopes of establishing his career in the theatre, but was the play was never performed, and its author was forced to go to sea as a ship’s surgeon instead. In his preface here, Smollett gives an account of his assorted reversals in attempting to get the tragedy produced, and he also wrote a fictionalized version of the tale in his novel Roderick Random.
