Comments

Julia Pardoe (1806-1862), an aspiring novelist and poet, traveled to Portugal in 1832 for her health and wrote this engaging travel narrative about her experiences there. It combines the descriptions and stories behind the places they visited with sketches about the characters she met and the legends she heard about – all nicely executed in a prose style similar to Washington Irving’s Sketchbook; indeed, Julia Pardoe had almost certainly read Irving, who was immensely popular in England at that time. Pardoe went on to write several other popular travels narratives, including ones about Turkey and Hungary.
