Comments

Novelist and poet Cornelia Knight (1757-1837) lived for several years in the 1790s in Rome and other parts of Italy, where she mastered numerous languages, drawing, painting and writing, the latter which she put to use in two works of fiction, including Dinarbus, a clever continuation of Johnson's Rasselas. In A Description of Latium, her only travelogue, she described ruins south of Rome in the Campagna, accompanied by an historical narrative about the Romans who built villas there and the everyday Italians who worked the land. A Description of Latium was published after Knight’s return to London in 1800 and dedicated to Queen Charlotte - in whose court she became a famous courtier. It is a fine, cultivated work of the Grand Tour and the first by a woman who was both the author and illustrator. Contemporary armorial bookplate on the front paste-down.
