CommentsOne of several works by Janetta Hughan Manners, Duchess of Rutland (1836-1899), on the benefits of libraries, guilds and other societies, in promoting the well-being of the working class. Lady Manners was an advocate for rights and greater involvement of women in society and dedicates this work to Queen Victoria. Her husband, John Manners, was the 7th Duke of Rutland and a sometime poet.
